We’re partnering with the Lagarde Winery to bring you high quality wines from a long-established, family-run vineyard and winery in Argentina.
Lagarde is located on the eastern side of the Andes mountains in Mendoza, in midwestern Argentina. The original owners of Lagarde planted the first vines in 1897. The Pescarmona family bought the winery in 1969 and planted additional, non-traditional grape varieties. The family balances the preservation of the old with investment in the newest technology. The antique façade remains inside the winery, which now has a capacity of approximately 2,000,000 liters including stainless steel tanks, concrete vats, and epoxy-coated French and American oak barrels. Annual production is limited to 1,200,000 liters to help ensure the quality of the wines.
Today, sisters Sofia and Lucila Pescarmona manage the business and participate in plantings, pruning the vineyard, wine-making, and bottling. Winemaker Juan Roby supervises in the winery. “Our goal is to produce small lots of high quality wines with limited production that represent the winery and its land of origin.”
“We believe in Mendoza, we believe in our people and we believe in the land. We rely on teamwork, the pursuit of excellence through the entire production process, and the constant search for the best possible land conditions.” The winery practices “precision viticulture.” They study the soil in the vineyards with the help of a Terroir Wine Consultant, looking for a balance of fertile soil and rocks for drainage, and classify sections, using their understanding to bring out the personailty of each wine.
The Pescarmona family’s management model promotes respect for people, communities, and the environment. Local community members participate in the harvests. Lagarde trains them and even offers yoga classes. Current environmental initiatives include an irrigation system and wastewater treatment system that recycle water for reuse for agricultural purposes, ecologically friendly light-weight bottles, and a waste-sorting program that separates recyclables and organic waste, which is reused as compost in the winery´s garden. The winery restaurant uses organic vegetables from the garden.
